A Student’s Academic Transformation

The real-world experiences of Spark Mentorships help middle school students like Kalin bridge the gaps between career possibilities and classroom learning. Kalin completed two Spark Mentorships with professionals at Oakland, CA-based companies and afterwards, shared, “My life is different now because of Spark and that includes school. Before, math wasn’t my favorite subject. But now I see that you can have cool jobs when you are good at math. It makes me try harder – I can see why school and even the classes that I don’t like are important.” As he gained valuable experience in computer programming, communication and project management, Kalin began to engage more in school, with measurable results. Over the course of the year, his GPA more than doubled, from 1.5 to 4.0. Mason, one of Kalin’s mentors, also noticed a difference, “Kalin’s confidence has grown and he feels comfortable talking with everyone.”
