Devon’s Spark

Devon, a bright and energetic student from John Barry Promise Academy, sought support in translating his academic potential into career possibilities. As part of a Spark Lab session in the fall, Devon and his classmates visited the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) where they met Peter, the Senior Vice President of Public Affairs.

In the spring, Devon was matched with Peter for a one-to-one Spark Mentorship. Devon met with Peter once a week after school for several weeks. Together, Peter and Devon developed a plan to design “Devon’s Corner,” a waiting area in CHOP’s new Buerger Center with the goal of making the space a calming and relaxing place for children and young teens. Devon shared that his Spark Mentorship gave him confidence to be a part of a team as well as time management and networking skills. Interacting with Peter taught Devon the importance of professionalism in his future career.

Devon hopes to become an entrepreneur and start his own business when he’s older. In addition to Devon’s Spark Project, he and Peter also discussed Devon’s critical next hurdle, high school placement. Peter supported Devon as he navigated the high school application and enrollment process. Now, Devon continues to build his future at Cristo Rey High and credits Peter’s mentorship with providing the sound advice and critical support he needed during a challenging transition.
