Promoting Possibility Together

Recognizing a shared interest in investing in the community to support middle school students’ success, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) partnered with Spark in the spring of 2015 to provide three students the opportunity to explore careers with dedicated employee mentors. Together with their mentors, students completed Spark Projects such as designs for a community recreation center and a career plan to cure leukemia.

The success of the pilot led Peter, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, to invest in expanding the partnership. The opportunity was enthusiastically welcomed by CHOP employees, 20 of whom volunteered with Spark in 2015-16.  Leading by example, Peter was paired with Devon, a bright, energetic Spark Student who sought support in translating his academic potential into career possibilities.

With the guidance of his Spark Mentor, Devon gained access to the inspiring leaders at a nationally renowned healthcare institution. Devon wants to become an entrepreneur and hopes to start his own business when he’s older.
