Top 5 Reasons to be a Spark Mentor

by: Sahrish Saleem, Senior Manager of Corporate Partnerships, Spark in Chicago

This Spring, you can mentor a Spark student in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Chicago, or Philadelphia.

Here are the top 5 reasons you should be a Spark mentor!

1. You will always be on point.
Spark students don’t hold back in telling you that the song from last month you’re humming is already so lame or that you clearly do not understand how to work your new iPhone. They may not always say it as tactfully as we’d like, but they will definitely make sure you know the latest trends!

2. You will learn a lot about yourself.
Mentoring a Spark student gives you the opportunity to learn about your own identity, community, and skill set. Ever tried explaining your job to a middle school student? It may not be easy, but you’ll learn to become a better communicator. You’ll also learn how to work with people who may come from different backgrounds and how to go with the flow, as no day is ever the same with a Spark student.

3. You will have an endless supply of funny stories at parties.
Spark students have a unique sense of humor, and have not yet developed the restraint we have in our lives. As a result, you have the student who earnestly answers the question “What is something stressful you will all go through in a few years?” with “Puberty!,” or the student who insists that before you get started, you really have to learn the latest dance move.

4. You will have a built-in stress reliever.
Spark allows you to take 2 hours out of your day every week, step away from your desk, and hang out with a 7th grader. It gives you something to look forward to! Spark students have a unique ability to recharge and reenergize you, allowing you to get back to work with a clear mind and be more productive.

5. You will be inspired by their positivity and hope.
Spark students know they can make a difference in the world and are eager to get started. They don’t consider the obstacles – to them, there are none – which is just downright inspiring. As a Spark mentor, you also help your student uncover new possibilities for their future by introducing them to a world they never knew existed!
